LIFE OF THE CARIBOU

I am studying the Caribou.  Caribou can be mistaken as reindeer, because they are their closest living relatives.  Caribou live in the Tundra, Alaska, Northern canada, Northern Scandinavia, and Greenland. The climate in the Tundra is 30ºF to 50℉.  Caribou eat lichen, Arctic cotton grass, willow leaves, mushrooms, and flower buds. They are herbivores.  Did you know that male caribou are as tall as an adult man?  They weigh a lot more, though. The female caribou are a little smaller, but both grow antlers.  The males fight each other with their antlers.  Antlers are made out of bone.  On the bone, there is skin called velvet. When it falls off, it looks weird.

THREATS

The Caribou are being poached by people, who sell their bones and antlers for lots of money. Antlers are kept as trophy’s, sometimes their heads too. The bones are used by the poachers to make weapons to kill more Caribou. Humans are burning gas and other toxic fuels to keep themselves warm. The gas fumes from toxic fuels, and the dirty trucks and trains are traveling to the Tundra, which causes Summer to come earlier. That means more bugs live longer without freezing. The bugs are eating all the plants which means the Caribou can’t store enough fat for the Winter cold.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

You can help save the Caribou by donating money to the World Wildlife Federation. If you adopt a stuffed animal from the World Wildlife Federation, that money will be used to save a real, live Caribou!  In the Summer, you can also sometimes ride your bike to school. That’s saving energy, so that means less bugs! You can also speak out about poaching!v
